The University of Delhi, informally known as Delhi University (DU), is a premier university of the country with a venerable legacy and international acclaim for highest academic standards, diverse educational programmes, distinguished faculty, illustrious alumni, varied co-curricular activities and modern infrastructure. DU is a collegiate public central university, located in New Delhi, India. It was founded in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly. As a collegiate university, its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and affiliated colleges. Consisting of three colleges, two faculties, and 750 students at its founding, the University of Delhi has since become India's largest institution of higher learning and among the largest in the world.

The university currently consists of 16 faculties and 86 departments distributed across its North and South campuses. It has 77 affiliated colleges and 5 other institutes with an enrolment of over 132,000 regular students and 261,000 non-formal students. The Vice-President of India serves as the University's chancellor.

DU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Association of Indian Universities, and Universitas 21, a global network of research-intensive universities.

DU has graduated many notable alumni, including seven heads of state or government and two Nobel laureates.

DU Ranking


The University has maintained its position at the top in the country as per the Centre for World University Ranking (CWUR) ranking and is 8th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework. It is also among the top 10 Indian public educational institutions/universities and the first among Indian public universities under QS BRICS University Rankings. The h-index of the University touched 157, one of the highest among Indian universities.

The University of Delhi has improved its ranking in QS World University Rankings 2020 by 13 places and has been ranked 474.

The University of Delhi has been ranked at 1st position among the top 25 Central Universities and at 8th rank among top 100 universities by Outlook-ICARE India University Rankings 2019.

The University of Delhi has been ranked as 601-800, 156, 130 in Times Higher Education (THE) World, THE Asia University Ranking and THE Emerging Economics University Ranking, 2019 respectively among the top Universities.
